Welcome to my little tutorial on how to make popular pins on Pinterest and bring you traffic, business and clients! In short, how to make your pins so successful, they go viral! Because believe me, you will notice a big difference between the pins that get a few hundred re-pins, versus those that soar into the thousands!

While this blog is not a raging success (yet!) I have had huge success with Pinterest that is growing every month! In fact, 97% of my traffic is because of Pinterest. That’s 9000+ visitors that are drawn to read my travel tips and lifestyle blogs because of my pins. Just look at my crazy stats from the month of March! In fact, the huge incline that began around December was mostly due to one particular pin. It took 2 months for my blog to go from 4,000 views to over almost 14,000!

What is it that draws people to pin a pin? What makes them click on it to read more? Pins are like the first impressions of your blog post or business, and it’s all about PRESENTATION and APPLICABILITY.

This blog post is going to focus strictly on the first half of this equation: how to make your pin look great. Because, in case you didn’t realize, Pinterest is ALL about the visuals. For further reading or help with Pinterest, reach the end of this post to know where to find those.

Without further ado, let’s get into making pins that will attract traffic and customers!

How to Make Viral Pins Through PRESENTATION

Imagine your pin is like the person standing outside of a restaurant wearing a nice suit that waves at you. It catches your eye, and asks “Are you feeling like Italian today? We have an excellent lasagna special this evening!”. Next thing you know, you’re dining inside with a glass of wine and enjoying pesto chicken.

Your pin is a lure, a way to draw people to what you are selling them. Whether it is travel tips, a fashion statement, a product review, or relationship advice, your pin can bring in viewers to see your creation.

Some people already are making pins, and maybe you are seeing a little success, but not what you were hoping for. Chances are there is room for improvement. Here are 5 tips of how to create effective pins that will bring you success through Pinterest.

1.Learn How to Use A Program

There are different programs that will fit different budgets and skill levels. It’s just a matter of finding the one for you.

Photoshop – I personally use Photoshop. We’ve been best friends since I was a young teen, so I’m very familiar with even the newest version. Not everyone is a graphic designer and not everyone needs 90% of the features the program has to offer, so it may not be worth paying for (unless you find a way to get it for free).

Lightroom – Lightroom is a  simplified version, though it is better suited for photo editing, it still has all the basic features you need to create pins. If you are a blogger that relies a lot on using your own photos, then this could be a really handy program to use.

Canva – I like this website when I don’t have a photo to use for a pin. It’s fairly easy to use and has many customization features for texts and layouts. It has many pre-made sets too, which is great if you don’t have a good eye for graphic layouts. It is important to try to keep to the same style consistently, so all your pins are recognizably yours. This is very helpful to develop a ‘brand’. The one downside to this website, is that a lot of good photos, especially with people in them, are NOT free. But most nature and still life are

PicMonkey – This website is pretty neat, similar to Canva. I recommend doing a 7 day trial and taking full advantage by creating several pins for past or future posts. Afterwards, you are stuck with the basics. At least you will know full well whether it is worth it for you to pay for the premium features. One neat feature is that you can import pictures from either your computer, or other online sources like a flicker account, Facebook, Dropbox. Basically you can create and edit pins remotely from any computer if you have photo files uploaded on a platform already.

2.Use the Right Dimensions

According to some, the ideal size of a pin is 735 pixels by X (adjusted height) normally about 1000 pixels tall. This is fairly standard for a pin with one main photo.

If you do add more photos, then you will want to make the pin taller. Don’t go overboard, 4-5 photos stacked is the maximum I recommend. Make sure the layout allow the photos to be complementary to one another. I normally work with the rule of thirds, I try to have the text along either the top third or bottom third, so that two thirds of the pin is just photo.

Again, if you are using Canva or PicMonkey, you can select pre-made layouts that work best for your pin. You don’t even necessarily have to use a photo, instead a stylized pin can be enough depending on what you are promoting, but I will talk about that in the next point.

The more you are able to have pins of a consistent style, the more recognizable your brand is and more professional you seem to both clients and potential sponsors or collaborators.

3. Make High Quality Pins

Some of the most cringe-worthy pins I’ve seen are usually the ones who violate one or more of these rules of aesthetics:

Legible Text

Text should ALWAYS be clear and easy to read. Red words on a green scenery is not easy to read. Funky and outlandish fonts are not easy to read.

I personally use 2 types of font for my pins. One is a brush stroke cursive style that is bold, the other is clean, simple, relatively thin and modern. You don’t have to use these particular styles, but I do recommend having 2 fonts that you use consistently. Two fonts helps break up the information on your pin, the title should stand out from any supporting information.

High Quality Image

This should be obvious, considering Pinterest is entirely based on visuals. And yet, some people have a picture with a palm tree in the background that is grainy and with poor composition, and think “that’s the one I’m going to use to promote my post”.

Invest in a decent camera, hire a photographer, learn how to take the best pictures on your smartphone, download some editing programs, or simply use stock images. Whatever you do, just make sure you have a high quality photo – that includes things like lighting, composition and editing. Natural-looking photos will fair much better than overly saturated or surreal-edited photos.

What do you do if you can’t take amazing photos? Use photos from other people! Many websites provide free stock photos or for low cost. Canva is one of them. I am building a great detailed list of where you can find free stock photos that are best for your blog! Stay tuned!

4. Create and Stick to a Design Style

How can you do this? By using a simple & complimentary colour scheme.

The more you are able to have pins of a consistent style, the more recognizable your brand is and more professional you seem to both clients and potential sponsors or collaborators.

If you are a fashion or lifestyle blogger, it can be fairly easy to have a main colour scheme. If you are a travel blogger, architect or nature photographer, it is harder to stick to a strict colour scheme. But you can stick to a specific style. It can be light and airy, or bright and bold, or maybe matte and dark.

Using design elements and fonts can also help give your pins a unison style. I know, for myself, it is hard to stick to a very strict colour scheme when it comes to my photos. Santorini pictures won’t look anything like the ones I take in Egypt or Russia. I do try to stick to bright photos, and lately I only use either white, or my blog colours (mint green, pink and gray) and always have the same fonts for all pins.

Some bloggers are even MORE consistent and follow a stricter pin style, but I can’t seem to follow a very specific pattern. But that’s ok! Unless you’re very concerned about growing your Pinterest following (which is a different subject) then at least focus on the specific elements mentioned above to develop a style.

5. Add Website Link or Logo

For some finishing touches, you want to display your website link or maybe your logo if you have one. It should be discreet and subtle, but not hidden. I always keep my blog link at the very bottom of the pin and lately I have started implementing my blog logo as well.

This does a few things for your pin:

  • makes it seem more professional
  • makes your brand more recognizable
  • and makes you look consistent and reliable

    One advice I had for you:

    Along with writing “*Also coming soon, A Free Resource Library related to blogging and Pinterest! Who’s excited?!*”

    You might want to add a call to action button below that text for a newsletter sign-up. This will create a ‘wait list’ for the people who would benefit from reading your post when it does come out. You will be able quantify your results much more effectively.

    This will accomplish 2 things:

    1. You’ll start to build an email list which is SUPER important in the long run for a blog.

    2. You will start to build a following and create that ‘hype’ effect which will sky rocket your views when the post is released.

    Additionally, the people who are genuinely interested in reading your upcoming post might lose out on this as they might forget to check back on your page. Therefore, when you do release this Resource library, they will be notified by your email instantly and you’ll have 10x of guaranteed exposure.
